BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)

BMR, or Basal Metabolic Rate, is the number of calories the body burns at complete rest to stay alive: breathing, circulation, brain activity and body temperature. It is the largest single component of daily expenditure and the base an estimate of TDEE is built on.

BMR: what is it?

BMR is the floor. It is what a client would burn lying still in a dark room, fasted, doing nothing at all. Coaches rarely prescribe against BMR directly, but every calorie target passes through it: BMR is the number the activity multiplier gets applied to, so an error here propagates into every downstream figure. Understanding what actually drives it also explains why two clients of the same weight need different plans.

What drives BMR

The single biggest determinant is body size, specifically the amount of metabolically active tissue. Organs punch far above their weight: the brain, liver, heart and kidneys make up a small fraction of bodyweight but account for a large share of resting expenditure. Skeletal muscle burns less per kilo than organs do, but there is a lot of it, and it is the part a client can change.

Age, sex, genetics, thyroid function and hormonal status all move BMR as well. This is the honest reason two clients with identical stats can need different calorie targets, and why a coach corrects an estimate against observed weight change rather than defending the formula.

The formulas coaches actually use

Three equations dominate practice. They disagree with each other by a meaningful margin on the same person, which is a useful reminder of how much they are approximating.

BMR versus RMR, and why the difference rarely matters

BMR is measured under strict laboratory conditions: fully rested, fasted, thermoneutral, immediately on waking. RMR (resting metabolic rate) is measured under looser conditions and comes out slightly higher. In practice, calculators and coaches use the terms interchangeably, and the gap between them is smaller than the error introduced by the activity multiplier applied on top.

What does matter is not treating either as a floor you should eat at. A calorie target set at or below BMR is aggressive by definition, leaves no room for training and typically produces poor adherence and poor training quality.

How BMR changes over a coaching cycle

Weight loss lowers BMR because there is less tissue to maintain. Some of that drop is simply mass; part of it comes from adaptive changes during a sustained deficit. Preserving lean mass during a cut, mostly through adequate protein and continued resistance training, is the practical lever a coach has to limit the fall.

On the other side, adding muscle raises BMR, but slowly and modestly. It is a real benefit of resistance training, and it is not a shortcut to a much larger calorie allowance. Framing muscle gain to a client as a metabolic transformation sets up a disappointment; framing it as one of several benefits is honest and holds up.
