Cold Water Immersion: what is it?

Ice baths are the recovery tool with the most awkward evidence base. They genuinely make people feel better, which is why athletes have used them for decades and why the practice is not going away. But the same anti-inflammatory response that reduces soreness appears to interfere with the signalling that drives muscle growth, which makes cold water immersion a tool with a real cost attached. For most clients the honest answer is not "yes" or "no" but "it depends what you are training for, and when".

What it does well

The reliable effect is on how the client feels: less soreness, less perceived fatigue, and a subjective sense of being ready sooner. For an athlete with two competitions in two days, or a client in a tournament weekend, feeling recovered has real value even if the underlying tissue is not repairing faster.

The broader claims circulating about cold exposure, from fat loss to immune function to mood, run well ahead of the evidence and are outside a coach's remit anyway. Stick to what you can defend: it makes people feel less sore, and it has a cost if it is used right after resistance training.
