Compound vs isolation exercises: what's the difference?
Compound exercises move two or more joints and train several muscle groups at once, like squats, deadlifts and presses. Isolation exercises move one joint and target one muscle, like curls or leg extensions. Compounds build the base of a program; isolation fills the gaps.

The compound versus isolation question is really a question about where a client's limited training time goes. A squat trains the quads, glutes, adductors and trunk in one movement and lets the client use heavy loads. A leg extension trains the quads alone, with less weight, less coordination and almost no learning curve. Neither is "better" in the abstract. The right split depends on the client's goal, training age, injury history and how many minutes they actually have in the gym.
Which should a coach use, and when?
Build the skeleton of almost every program from compound lifts, then add isolation work on top. A general-population client with three 45-minute sessions a week gets the most out of a squat pattern, a hinge, a push, a pull and some carry or core work. That covers the whole body in a handful of exercises and leaves ten minutes for one or two isolation movements the client cares about, like arms or calves.
Lean harder on isolation in three situations. First, weak points: a client whose bench stalls because their triceps give out benefits from direct triceps work more than from another set of bench. Second, rehab and return-to-training: a single-joint movement lets you load a tissue precisely without the coordination demand of a barbell lift. Third, hypertrophy for muscles that compounds do not fully cover, like lateral delts, hamstrings through knee flexion, or calves.
Consider the fatigue budget too. A 55-year-old client recovering slowly may do better with one heavy compound per session followed by machine and isolation work, rather than three barbell lifts back to back. An athlete in season may keep compounds minimal and heavy, then use isolation work to maintain muscle without draining the nervous system before competition.
The ordering rule holds in nearly every case: compounds first while the client is fresh, isolation after, when technique matters less and going close to failure is safe.
Can you combine them in one session?
Most good programs do. A common structure is one or two heavy compound lifts, one or two lighter compound or machine variations, then two to four isolation movements. Pre-exhaust methods flip the order (an isolation set before the compound) to make a lagging muscle the limiting factor, but that trades load on the compound lift for targeting, so it belongs in a hypertrophy block rather than a strength block.

Do compound exercises replace isolation work for arms?
Rows, pull-ups and presses train the biceps and triceps hard, and many clients grow arms from compounds alone at first. Past the beginner stage, adding direct curls and triceps work usually produces more arm growth than more pressing and pulling. Two to four isolation sets per arm muscle a week is a reasonable starting point.
