Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge in body fluid, mainly sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium and calcium. They regulate fluid balance, nerve signalling and muscle contraction. They are lost in sweat, which is why heavy sweating calls for salt as well as water.
Electrolytes: what are they?
Electrolytes are one of the most heavily marketed categories in fitness and one of the least necessary for the average client. A person training an hour indoors in a temperate gym and eating normal food is not running an electrolyte deficit. Where they genuinely matter is heavy and prolonged sweating, hot conditions, and very low-carbohydrate diets, and knowing that difference is what stops a coach selling sachets to someone who needs a glass of water.
The main electrolytes and what they do
Sodium is the one lost in the largest quantity in sweat, and the one most often under-consumed when a client cleans up their diet and cuts out all processed food at once.

When a client actually needs to supplement
The situations that justify deliberate electrolyte intake are specific: sessions lasting well beyond an hour, training or working in heat, clients who sweat unusually heavily or leave visible salt marks on clothing, and endurance events. Outside of those, food does the job.
A very low-carbohydrate diet is a second real case. Lower carbohydrate intake changes how the body handles sodium and water, and the tiredness, headaches and cramps that clients report in the first weeks of such a diet often track back to sodium rather than to the diet being inherently punishing.

The cramp question

Sodium is worth addressing when losses are genuinely high, but a coach who promises a sachet will fix cramping is over-claiming.
The more productive coaching response to recurrent cramp is to look at training load, sleep, total fluid and sodium intake together, rather than treating it as a single-nutrient problem.
Products, food and scope
Commercial electrolyte drinks are a convenience. The same effect can come from salted food, a pinch of salt in water, or a sports drink where carbohydrate is also wanted. The convenience is real for endurance athletes and largely irrelevant for a client doing three gym sessions a week.
Sodium is also a genuine medical variable. Clients with high blood pressure, kidney disease or on medication that affects fluid balance should be talking to a doctor before a coach starts encouraging extra salt, and in many countries building an individualised prescriptive diet is regulated territory reserved for dietitians and doctors. Check what your own qualification allows, give the general principle, and refer the individual case.
