Isometric contraction
Isometric is a muscle contraction where the muscle produces force without changing length, so nothing moves. Planks, wall sits, paused squats and pushing against an immovable bar are all isometric. It builds strength at a specific joint angle and is widely used in tendon rehab.
Isometric contraction: what is it?
Most training moves a weight through a range. Isometric training holds a position instead, which sounds easier than it is. A 60-second wall sit or a heavy 5-second pause at the bottom of a squat produces a lot of tension with very little movement and very little muscle damage. Coaches use isometrics to build stability, to strengthen a weak position in a lift, to load a painful tendon safely, and as a low-fatigue way to keep strength during rehab.
Overcoming versus yielding isometrics
There are two kinds. An overcoming isometric means pushing or pulling as hard as possible against something that will not move: a bar set against safety pins, a wall, a partner. The effort is maximal and short, usually 3 to 6 seconds, and it trains the ability to produce force at that exact joint angle. A yielding isometric means holding a load in place without letting it move: a plank, a wall sit, holding a dumbbell at 90 degrees of a curl, a pause at the bottom of a bench press. The effort is submaximal and longer, and it trains the ability to resist.
Overcoming isometrics fit strength and power programs (attacking a sticking point at its exact angle). Yielding isometrics fit hypertrophy, core work, rehab and beginners who need to learn a position before moving through it.
Typical hold durations
Hold length depends on the goal. Short and maximal for strength, long and submaximal for endurance and tendons.

Isometrics for tendon rehab
Long, heavy isometric holds have become a standard first step in managing tendon pain such as patellar, Achilles or elbow tendinopathy. The hold loads the tendon without the repeated stretch-shorten cycle that irritates it, many clients report a short-term drop in pain right after, and it keeps the muscle strong while the tendon settles. The usual prescription is several holds of 30 to 45 seconds at a load that is heavy but keeps pain at a tolerable level, repeated most days, before progressing to slow eccentric and then normal dynamic work.
This is a coaching tool within your scope as long as the client has been assessed and the pain is a known tendon issue, not an undiagnosed injury. When in doubt, refer out first.
Common mistakes and limits
Isometric strength is mostly specific to the joint angle trained, give or take about 15 degrees. A 90-degree wall sit does not make the full squat much stronger. If the goal is a full lift, use the isometric at the weak angle and keep training the full range too.
The second mistake is breath holding. Long yielding holds with a held breath spike blood pressure; cue the client to breathe through the hold. Finally, isometrics cause little soreness and little fatigue, which makes them easy to overdo in volume and easy to underrate in effort. A 5-second maximal push is a real set.

Are isometrics safe for people with high blood pressure?
Isometric exercise raises blood pressure during the hold, especially with a held breath, so clients with known hypertension should have medical clearance and should breathe continuously through every hold. Interestingly, regular light isometric handgrip and wall-sit protocols are also studied as a way to lower resting blood pressure over time, but that is a clinical decision, not a coaching one.
