Linear periodization is a training model where volume decreases and intensity increases progressively across a block. A client starts with many reps at moderate load and finishes with few reps at heavy load, moving from general work toward a specific peak.
Linear Periodization: what is it?
Linear periodization is the oldest and most widely taught planning model, and it is still the default in most strength textbooks. The logic is easy to follow: build a base of work capacity and muscle first, then convert that base into strength as the loads climb and the reps drop. Because the direction of travel never changes, it is the model that is easiest to explain to a client and the hardest to get wrong.
What a linear block looks like
The classic version runs 12 to 16 weeks and moves through phases. Each phase keeps the same exercises and simply shifts the rep and load targets. The example below is a standard structure, not a prescription; the exact numbers depend on the client and the lift.

Why it works, and who it works best for
Linear periodization works because it respects the order in which qualities build on each other. Volume early creates the muscle and the tendon tolerance that heavy loads later demand. It also produces very clean progress data: if the same lift is tracked week to week with a single moving variable, a stall is obvious immediately.
It fits beginners and early intermediates best, because they adapt to one stimulus for weeks at a time and do not need variety to keep progressing. It also fits anyone with a single fixed date: a first powerlifting meet, a physical test, a wedding, a return-to-sport deadline.
The known weaknesses
The trade-off is detraining. Spend eight weeks away from high-rep work and endurance qualities fade; spend eight weeks away from heavy loads and the nervous system gets rusty. In a long linear block, whatever you stop training in week one is measurably worse by week twelve.
The second weakness is rigidity. A linear plan assumes the client trains as scheduled. Two weeks of travel in the middle of a strength phase breaks the ramp, and there is no built-in mechanism to absorb it. This is exactly the gap undulating and autoregulated models were designed to fill.
A practical fix is to keep a maintenance dose of the quality you are not emphasizing: one high-rep back-off set during the strength phase, one heavier top set during the hypertrophy phase. It costs almost nothing and prevents the cliff.
Programming it without over-thinking it
Pick two to four main lifts and run them the whole block; rotate only the accessories. Move one variable at a time: within a phase, add reps or add load, never both in the same week. When the top set of the phase is hit for all prescribed reps, that phase is done, even if the calendar says otherwise.
Set the test week before you start. A linear block without a test at the end is just a program that gets heavier, and the client never gets the moment where the work pays off visibly.
