Range of motion (ROM)

Range of motion (ROM) is the distance a joint travels during an exercise, from full extension to full flexion. Full ROM trains the muscle through its entire length; partial ROM deliberately limits the movement, which is useful for overload, injury work or targeting the stretched position.

Range of motion: what is it?

Range of motion is both a property of the client (how far their joint can move) and a choice in the program (how far you ask them to move it under load). Full range of motion is the default for almost every client and every goal because it trains the muscle through its whole length, builds strength at the weakest positions and doubles as mobility work. Partial range of motion is a tool with specific uses, and recent interest in "lengthened partials" has made it worth understanding rather than dismissing.

Full versus partial range of motion

Full ROM means the joint moves through its complete available range for that exercise: chest to the bar on a pull-up, hamstrings on calves in a squat, elbows fully extended and flexed on a curl. Partial ROM stops short of one end or both. The practical difference is where the muscle does its work. Full ROM includes the stretched position, where the muscle is under the most tension and where much of the growth stimulus appears to come from.

Lengthened partials

A lengthened partial is a partial rep performed in the stretched half of the movement: the bottom half of a squat, the bottom of a cable fly, the stretched position of a leg curl. The research trend suggests that training the muscle at long lengths is at least as effective for growth as full ROM, and more effective than partials in the shortened half. That is the opposite of the "half-rep at the top" most clients drift toward when tired.

The practical application is to finish a set with lengthened partials once full reps fail, or to program them on exercises where the top of the movement adds little (cable flys, lateral raises, leg curls). Lengthened partials are an addition to full ROM training, not a replacement.

When partial range of motion is useful

Partial ROM has legitimate uses beyond lengthened partials. Board presses, pin squats and block pulls let a strength athlete overload a sticking point with more weight than a full rep allows. A client returning from injury may train a pain-free portion of the range and expand it week by week. A beginner who cannot squat to depth with a neutral spine should squat to the depth they can control and progress from there rather than being forced into a range they do not own.

Safety and common mistakes

The main error is unplanned partial ROM: reps that shrink as the load goes up, so the client is "lifting more" over a shorter distance. That is not progress, it is a different exercise. Set a range standard for each lift (a box for squats, a pause at the chest on a bench, full lockout on a press) and count only reps that meet it.

The second error is forcing full ROM through a range the client does not control. Depth achieved by rounding the lower back or collapsing the knees is not full ROM, it is a compensation. Range should be earned through mobility and control, then loaded. Deep, loaded positions are safe for a client who can hold them with good alignment, and risky for one who cannot.
