Sit-and-Reach Test

The sit-and-reach test measures hamstring and lower-back flexibility. The client sits with legs straight and feet against a box, then reaches forward as far as possible with stacked hands. The distance reached along the box scale is the score.

Sit-and-Reach Test: what is it?

The sit-and-reach has survived for decades because it needs one piece of equipment, takes two minutes and produces a number a client instantly understands. It is also routinely oversold. What it actually measures is how far one particular chain, the hamstrings and the lower back, will let a client fold forward on that day. It says nothing about shoulder, hip or ankle range, and a client can score badly on it while being perfectly mobile everywhere else that matters for their training.

Protocol

Warm up first, because flexibility measured cold is a different number than flexibility measured warm, and an unwarmed client is being asked to push into end range. Five to ten minutes of light aerobic work plus some dynamic hip and hamstring movement is enough.

The client sits on the floor with legs straight and knees flat, shoes off, feet flat against the front face of the box. Hands are stacked one on top of the other, palms down. They reach forward slowly along the top of the box, hold the furthest position for about two seconds, and you read the score. Three attempts, best one counts.

  • No bouncing. A ballistic reach inflates the score and stresses the tissue you are measuring.
  • Knees stay flat on the floor. If one knee lifts, the attempt does not count.
  • Hands stay stacked and level. Reaching further with one hand invalidates the reading.
  • On a standard metric box the footline sits at the 26 cm mark. Imperial boxes follow a separate convention, with the footline at 15 inches, so read scores against whichever line your own box uses.

Reading the score

Because the metric footline is at 26 cm, a client whose fingertips reach exactly to their toes scores about 26. Anything past that means they reached beyond their toes, anything below means they did not get there. Published norm tables exist and vary by age, sex and protocol, so rather than quote a table that may not match your box, the more honest orientation is below.

The proportion problem, and the modified version

The classic version quietly assumes everyone has the same arm-to-leg proportions, which they do not. A client with long arms and short legs will score well on their first day without being especially flexible, and a client with the opposite build will look restricted when they are not. Comparing two different clients on the raw score is therefore not very meaningful.

The modified sit-and-reach fixes this. The client sits with their back and hips against a wall, reaches forward with straight arms without letting the shoulders leave the wall, and that starting position is set as their personal zero. Every subsequent reach is measured from that zero, so the score reflects the client's own change rather than their skeleton.

What to use it for

Use it as a baseline you compare a client against themselves, on a fixed schedule, under identical conditions. That is what it is good at. Retesting after a block of hamstring and hip work with the same warm-up, same time of day and same box gives you a clean answer about whether the work did anything.

Do not use it to make claims it cannot support. It does not predict back pain, it does not describe whole-body flexibility, and a client who cannot touch their toes is not thereby unfit to deadlift. If the question is whether a client can get into a specific position for a specific lift, test that position directly instead.

Why is the footline at 26 cm and not zero?

Standard metric boxes are built with the scale offset so that reaching level with the toes reads about 26 cm. The offset exists so clients who cannot reach their toes still record a positive number rather than a negative one. Imperial boxes use their own offset, with the footline at 15 inches, which is a different convention rather than the same distance converted, since 15 inches is 38.1 cm. Check your own box before comparing to anyone else's scores.

Does a poor sit-and-reach score mean a client will hurt their back?

No. The test measures range of motion in one chain, and range of motion is not the same thing as injury risk. Treat a low score as a prompt to look at hamstring and hip mobility if it actually limits a movement the client needs, and nothing more than that.

How often should I retest it?

Every eight to twelve weeks, in line with the rest of your reassessment battery. Flexibility measured more often mostly captures how warm the client was and what time of day it is, which is noise rather than progress.
