Skinfold measurement uses calipers to pinch the thickness of skin and the fat underneath at standardised sites. The readings are entered into a regression equation to estimate body fat percentage, or tracked as a raw sum of millimetres, which avoids the equation entirely.

Skinfold Measurement: what is it?

Calipers are the oldest field method for estimating body composition and, in the hands of a consistent tester, still one of the most useful. The physical measurement is honest: you are reading how thick a fold of skin and subcutaneous fat is, in millimetres, at a defined anatomical site. The uncertainty is introduced afterwards, when that millimetre total is pushed through an equation built on a reference population your client may not resemble. Which is why many experienced coaches skip the equation altogether.

The standard site protocols

Different equations require different sites, and the sites are not interchangeable. The three most commonly used protocols in the field are below. Whichever you use, all folds are taken on the right side of the body by convention, and every equation assumes you follow its own site definitions exactly.

Technique, which is where the error lives

A skinfold is a pinch of skin and the fat beneath it, lifted away from the muscle. Grasp the fold firmly about a centimetre above the marked site, apply the calipers perpendicular to the fold at its midpoint, and read after roughly two seconds, before the tissue compresses further. Keep holding the fold while you read.

Take two readings per site and rotate through all sites rather than repeating one site back to back, since repeated pinching compresses the tissue. If two readings at a site differ by more than about two millimetres, take a third and use the median.

  • Mark the sites with a pen before you start, using the anatomical landmarks, not by eye.
  • Always the same side of the body, always the same tester.
  • Dry skin only. Do not measure straight after training or a shower.
  • Never measure over a site with a tattoo distorting the landmark, a scar or any skin condition.

Sum of skinfolds beats a percentage

Adding the raw millimetres together and tracking that sum removes the biggest source of uncertainty, because it drops the population-based equation completely. A 7-site sum going from 96 mm to 78 mm is an unambiguous statement about subcutaneous fat at those sites. Converting both figures to a percentage adds precision that was never there.

The sum has a second advantage: it is far less intimidating to a client than a body fat percentage, while still being a number that clearly goes down when things are working.

Accuracy and its limits

The honest framing for a client is that a well executed skinfold estimate is good at tracking change and only approximate in absolute terms. Repeatability depends almost entirely on the tester, which is why a coach who takes hundreds of measurements gets more useful data from cheap calipers than an occasional user gets from expensive ones.

The method also has hard limits. Skinfolds read subcutaneous fat only, so they say nothing about fat stored inside the abdomen, and they become unreliable at higher body fat levels where the fold no longer fits the jaws of the caliper. In those cases, girths and waist circumference are the better tools.
