Circuit training
Circuit training is a workout format where three or more exercises are performed back to back with little or no rest, followed by a longer rest before the circuit is repeated. It trains muscular endurance and conditioning in a short, time-efficient session.
Circuit training: what is it?
A circuit strings exercises into a loop. The client moves from station to station with minimal rest, completes the round, rests, and goes again for a set number of rounds or a set time. The format packs a lot of work into a short window and keeps the heart rate elevated throughout, which is why it dominates group classes, conditioning blocks and general fitness programs. The trade-off is that the short rests limit how heavy any single exercise can be.
Structure of a circuit
Three variables define a circuit: the stations, the work per station, and the rest structure. Work can be set by reps (12 reps then move) or by time (40 seconds on, 20 seconds transition). Rest between stations is short, typically 0 to 30 seconds, and rest between rounds is longer, usually 1 to 3 minutes. Most circuits run 3 to 5 rounds of 5 to 10 stations.
Ordering matters. Alternating muscle groups (lower body, upper push, upper pull, core) lets one area recover while another works, so the client can keep intensity up across the round. Putting two quad exercises back to back turns the circuit into a leg burnout.
Station design
A well-built circuit balances movement patterns, equipment and the transitions between them. Machines are awkward in a circuit because someone else may be using them; bodyweight, dumbbells, kettlebells and cables work best.

Circuit versus superset
A superset pairs two exercises; a circuit chains three or more. The difference is more than a number. A superset is usually a hypertrophy tool, two exercises for opposing or unrelated muscles so each can still be trained hard. A circuit is usually a conditioning tool: the longer chain and shorter rests mean the limiting factor becomes breathing and general fatigue rather than the strength of any one muscle. Tri-sets and giant sets sit in between, chaining three or more exercises for the same muscle group.
Conditioning use versus strength use
Circuits are excellent for conditioning, fat loss phases, beginners who need movement variety, and clients with 30 minutes. They are a poor way to build maximal strength, because fatigue from the previous station caps the load and short rests prevent the recovery heavy sets need. A strength-focused client should do the main lifts with full rest first and use a short circuit as a finisher, if at all. Time-based circuits also need a plan for progression, such as heavier implements, more rounds or shorter rests, or they stop producing adaptation after a few weeks.
