Glutes
The glutes are the three muscles of the buttock: gluteus maximus, medius and minimus. Maximus extends the hip and is the body's largest muscle; medius and minimus sit on the side of the pelvis and stop it dropping when you stand on one leg.
Glutes: what are they?
When a client says glutes they mean gluteus maximus, the big surface muscle that runs from the back of the pelvis and sacrum down to the femur and the IT band. Underneath and to the side sit gluteus medius and minimus, which do a completely different job. Maximus is the engine of hip extension and the reason humans can run and jump; medius and minimus are the stabilizers that keep the pelvis level every time one foot leaves the ground. Training the first without the second is one of the most common gaps in a general strength program.
What each of the three actually does
Gluteus maximus extends the hip, rotates the thigh outwards and, through its lower fibres, helps with adduction. It produces the drive out of the bottom of a squat, the lockout of a deadlift, the push of a sprint stride. It also works hard eccentrically, controlling the descent into a hinge.
Gluteus medius and minimus abduct the hip, taking the leg out to the side, and rotate it. Their more important job is the opposite one: when you stand on one leg, they hold the opposite side of the pelvis up. Every step you take is a single-leg stance, so they work more often than any other hip muscle even though nobody trains them directly.
How to train the glutes
Glute maximus responds to both heavy hip extension and high-tension work at short muscle length; the two do not fully substitute for each other. The lateral fibres and the smaller glutes need a separate abduction or single-leg stimulus. A complete glute week covers a hinge, a thrust, a unilateral pattern and an abduction movement.

What goes wrong in practice
The most common issue is not a glute that will not fire, it is a hip that never reaches full extension. A client who stands all day with the pelvis tipped forward and the hip flexors short simply never finishes a hip extension, so the glutes never get loaded at the end of the range where they contract hardest. Hip thrusts and back extensions solve this faster than any activation drill.
The second is a squat or lunge that turns into a quad exercise. Depth, torso angle and stance width all shift load towards or away from the hips. If a client feels nothing in their glutes on a squat, widening the stance slightly and increasing depth changes more than adding a band.
The third is the missing abduction work. A client can have a strong hip thrust and still let their pelvis drop and their knee cave on every running step. Single-leg work and direct abduction close that gap; heavy bilateral lifting does not.
Glutes and the client conversation
Glutes are one of the few muscles clients ask for by name, usually for how they look. That is a useful entry point, because the training that changes their shape is the same training that improves hip extension strength, running economy and lower-back tolerance. You rarely have to choose between what the client wants and what they need.
What you do have to manage is expectation about rate. Glute maximus is a large muscle with a long tendon and it responds well, but visible change follows months of progressive load, not weeks of banded warm-ups. Tracking load on a hip thrust and a split squat gives the client something objective to watch while the visible change is still building.

Frequently asked questions
Are hip thrusts better than squats for glutes?
They load a different part of the range. The hip thrust puts peak tension at full hip extension, where the glutes are shortest; a deep squat or RDL loads them at long length. Both stimuli build the muscle and neither replaces the other, so most programs include one of each.
Do I need glute activation exercises before lifting?
A few banded reps in a warm-up are harmless and help some clients find the position, but they do not switch a muscle on. If a client feels nothing in the glutes during their working sets, the fix is usually in range of motion, stance or load placement, not in a longer activation routine.
How often should glutes be trained?
Two to three sessions a week works for most clients, with the heavier hinge and thrust work separated by at least 48 hours. Abduction and single-leg work recover faster and can be added to almost any lower-body day without cutting into the next session.
