Scapula
The scapula, or shoulder blade, is the triangular bone that sits on the back of the rib cage and carries the shoulder socket. It is held in place by muscle rather than by a tight joint, so it can slide, tilt and rotate, and the arm can only reach overhead if it rotates with it.
Scapula: what is it?
The scapula connects to the rest of the skeleton at only one point, the small joint where it meets the collarbone. Everything else holding it in position is muscle: trapezius, rhomboids, serratus anterior, levator scapulae, pectoralis minor and the rotator cuff. That arrangement gives the shoulder its huge range and makes the scapula the piece coaches need to understand, because how it moves determines what position the shoulder joint is in during every press, pull and overhead lift.
How the scapula moves
It has six movements, and each has a muscle group that produces it. Understanding which is missing tells you what to program.

Scapulohumeral rhythm
When the arm lifts overhead, the shoulder blade rotates upwards to keep the socket facing the arm. The two move in a coordinated ratio, with the arm contributing more early in the range and the scapula contributing steadily throughout. If the scapula does not rotate, the arm runs out of room well before it reaches vertical, and the client compensates by arching the lower back or leaning away.
Practically this means that an overhead press problem is often a scapular problem. Before assuming a client has a stiff shoulder joint, watch what the shoulder blade does as the arm goes up. If it shrugs instead of rotating, serratus anterior and the lower trapezius are the place to start.
The shoulders back and down cue
Set the shoulder blades back and down is a good instruction in exactly one context: a bench press or a heavy row, where a stable base is what the lift needs. Applied to overhead work it does the opposite of what is required, because it blocks the upward rotation the arm depends on.
The better framing for clients is that the shoulder blade should be stable when the arm is pulling or pressing horizontally, and mobile when the arm travels overhead. Coaches who apply one cue to everything usually end up with clients who press overhead badly and cannot work out why.
Winging and scapular control
A scapula whose inner border lifts away from the rib cage during a push-up or a press is winging. Mild versions are common and usually reflect serratus anterior not doing its job of holding the blade against the ribs. Serratus work, push-up plus variations, overhead carries and controlled scapular push-ups typically improve it.
A pronounced, sudden or one-sided wing is a different matter, and can involve nerve issues affecting serratus anterior. That is a clinical question, not a programming one. Refer it and keep training around it rather than trying to strengthen through it.
