The glycemic index (GI) ranks carbohydrate foods from 0 to 100 by how quickly they raise blood glucose compared with pure glucose. High-GI foods raise it fast, low-GI foods more slowly. It applies to single foods eaten alone, which limits how useful it is in a real meal.
Glycemic Index: what is it?
The glycemic index is one of the most quoted and least well applied concepts in nutrition. It is a real measurement, taken under controlled conditions on a fixed amount of carbohydrate from a single food eaten on its own. Almost nobody eats that way. Understanding both what GI measures and where it stops applying is what lets a coach answer client questions about it honestly instead of repeating magazine advice.
The scale, and what moves a food along it
GI is scored against glucose at 100. The ranking of a given food is affected by processing, ripeness, cooking time, and what else is on the plate, which is why the same ingredient can appear at different values in different tables.

Glycemic index versus glycemic load
GI ignores portion size, which is its biggest practical weakness. Watermelon has a high GI and very little carbohydrate per serving, so eating a normal portion has a modest effect on blood glucose. Glycemic load fixes this by multiplying GI by the grams of carbohydrate actually eaten, and it is the more useful of the two for anyone making real food decisions.
This is why a coach should be careful with the phrase avoid high-GI foods. A client who cuts out watermelon and carrots while keeping their portions of white bread has followed the advice and missed the point entirely.
Why GI matters less inside a mixed meal
GI is measured on a food eaten alone. Add protein, fat, fiber or acidity and the glucose response of the meal changes substantially. A slice of white bread on its own and the same slice with eggs and avocado behave differently, so quoting the bread's GI tells you very little about what the client actually ate.
For most coaching clients, total calories, total carbohydrate and overall diet quality are far larger levers than the GI of individual ingredients. GI becomes genuinely useful in narrower situations: fuelling around training, and for clients managing blood glucose under medical supervision.

The other honest use is as a conversation starter about food quality. Most low-GI foods are less processed and higher in fiber, so a client moving toward them tends to improve their diet for reasons that have little to do with the index itself. Clients with diabetes or diagnosed glucose issues should be working with a doctor or dietitian; that sits outside a personal trainer's scope.
